Toffee Topped Cake

This nut and chocolate chip topped cake is great for a morning coffee-klatsch or to serve kids after school with a tall, cool glass of milk.

Oven temp:   350 degrees F


For 1 13-by-9-inch cake you will need:

  • 2 cups brown sugar, well-packed
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) soft butter or margarine
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

 
  • 1. Blend brown sugar, flour and butter or margarine until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Remove 1 cup of the mixture and reserve.

  • 2. To remaining mixture add the baking powder, salt, vanilla, milk and egg. Mix until smooth and blended.

  • 3. Butter a 13-by-9-inch cake pan. Turn batter into the pan, spreading it evenly.

  • 4. Sprinkle reserved crumbs over evenly, then sprinkle with chocolate chips and walnuts.

  • 5. Bake 30 to 35 minutes until cake pulls away from the sides of the pan and the center tests is done.
