Sour Cream Walnut Cakes

Sour cream makes this a deliciously tender cake that is suitable for dessert or served with your favorite beverage as a snack. It freezes beautifully too.

Oven temp:   325 degrees F


For 1 9-inch square cake you will need:

  • 1/2 cup soft butter or margarine
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar, divided
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. each baking powder and baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon

 
  • 1. Cream butter and 1 cup sugar until blended.

  • 2. Add eggs, one at a time, beating thoroughly after each, until mixture is light and fluffy.

  • 3. Stir in sour cream and vanilla.

  • 4. Mix flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

  • 5. Add to first mixture and beat until smooth.

  • 6. Spread half of batter in greased 9-inch square baking pan.

  • 7. Mix remaining 1/2 cup sugar, the walnuts and cinnamon.

  • 8. Sprinkle about 2/3 of mixture over batter.

  • 9. Spread with remaining batter. Sprinkle with remaining nut mixture.

  • 10. Bake at 325 degrees F for 45 minutes or until pick inserted near center comes out clean.

  • 11. Serve warm or cool from pan.
