Old-Fashioned Butter Cake

This old-fashioned butter cake with its simple powdered sugar dusting has been passed along from good cook to good cook for generations. It is known as being a "good keeper," if you can keep it well hidden.

Preparation time:   10 min
Baking time:   1 1/2 hrs
Oven temp:   350 degrees F

For 1 cake you will need:

  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 4 eggs
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Sifted powdered sugar

  • 1. Beat together butter and sugar until fluffy.

  • 2. Beat in vanilla. Add eggs one at a time, blending well after each addition.

  • 3. Combine flour with baking soda and salt. Add to batter alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour.

  • 4. Butter and flour an 8-cup fluted mold. Pour in batter.

  • 5. Bake at 350 degrees F for about 1 1/2 hrs or until a tester inserted in center comes out clean. Allow cake to stand 5 min. Invert. Remove cake from pan and finish cooling on a rack. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
