Chocolate-Sprinkled Brown Sugar Cake

Next time, it's your turn to bring dessert to a potluck supper or picnic, try this delicious cake. It has a baked-on frosting combining a buttery streusel, chocolate sprinkles and walnuts.

Oven temp:   350 degrees F


For 1 cake, 10 to 12 servings, you will need:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 cups firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup (3/8 lb.) firm butter or margarine
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 Tbsp. firm butter or margarine
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/3 cup chocolate sprinkles

 
  • 1. In a mixing bowl stir together flour, baking powder and salt. Thoroughly mix in brown sugar. Cut in the 3/4 cup butter until mixture forms fine crumbs; remove and reserve 1 cup of flour-butter mixture for topping.

  • 2. To remaining flour-butter mixture, add milk, vanilla and egg. Beat until batter is smooth. Spread batter in a buttered, lightly floured 13-by-9-inch baking pan.


  • 3. Cut the 3 Tbsp. butter into reserved flour-butter mixture; stir in walnuts and chocolate sprinkles. Sprinkle evenly over batter.

  • 4. Bake cake at 350 degrees F until pick inserted near center comes out clean, about 45 min.

  • 5. Cool, then cut into squares and serve.
