- 1. Mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar in mixing bowl.
- 2. Cut in butter or shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- 3. With fork, stir in buttermilk to make a soft dough. Turn out onto lightly floured board and knead about 10 times to form a smooth ball. Do not overknead or biscuits will not be tender.
- 4. Roll out to a 6-by-6 inch square. Place on ungreased baking sheet. With knife, cut dough into 12 portions (see photo). Do not seperate; leave biscuits in a square.
- 5. Bake at 400 degrees F until golden, about 15 min.
Tips: These biscuits are best served hot. However, if you have leftovers, they can be toasted and used as a base for poached or creamed eggs, ham or tuna.
Good served with: Butter and honey or homemade jams or preserves. A classic to serve with fried chicken, Southern style.
